Bear

We have a second son. His name is Edmund Gregory Thurman; lovingly called Bear. One would think that three babies in a three year span would limit our naming options; or at least expedite the process. Not for us. We wrestled for months on end with what to christen our newest. The combination we decided on means “fortunate protector” and “vigilant, a watchman.”

Is there any more apt name for an angel?

After numerous false starts, my body’s final attempt at labor began on Thursday evening. As Josh tucked in our toddlers, I listened to the familiar thump of Bear’s heartbeat with a handheld doppler, and timed contractions. An hour and a half later, my water broke, and we drove to the hospital. In triage, we stared in disbelief at an ultrasound image that revealed no movement in our beloved’s chest. Labor rapidly progressed, and at 9:44pm on March 1st beautiful Bear was placed in my arms.

Our love for you is limitless. No description is sufficient. The ache will never cease. You will be carried with us on every adventure, and a part of our family story that we will forever cherish. We pray that God uses you mightily Bear Thurman. Oh, how we love you.

“Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in life. The Book of Common Prayer
